The cars in Dirt 5 control well, with the difficulty feeling right in the sweet spot. Whilst I’m horrible at simulation racers such as Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo, I absolutely love over-the-top arcade racers that don’t penalise you too much for putting pedal to the metal and smashing into the occasional wall. Playing through a few of the arcade matches before booting into career mode, I could tell that I was going to be in for a good time.

I also think it looks really good on PS5 and I can imagine the haptics are great on that version.I wouldn’t have thought that Dirt 5 would be the first game that I’d be experiencing on a next-gen console, but as a major fan of the MotorStorm franchise, and with Dirt 5 taking a more arcade direction, I was keen to jump in and check out not only the game but the Xbox Series X optimisations.

And I’m playing it on my Series X and yes it looks great. It shouldn’t matter if it’s better than the PS5 version or not.

It’s great that Series X can push the quality high. It doesn’t feel good when you have the “worse” version and people are gloating about it. And I say that as someone who didn’t pay attention to the Xbox side of things before, and I’m sorry for it. I know it’s easy for me to keep saying these consoles are close and both equally awesome since I have both, but some of you should really think how your words affect the “other side”. This was not a “oh, I’m so glad that the game looks so awesome on Series X”, this was a “I’m glad there is a difference”. But being enthusiastic that one version is “better” seems wrong. Of course, that doesn’t mean one version should be deliberately made worse for some parity, I think games should push the limits of each system. Shouldn’t we want that games look great on both so that most people get to experience great graphics? This just seems like a bad implementation and just the fact that it causes UI scaling issues suggests something's not right.īoth consoles cost the same and have a sizable audience. I'm completely in favor of developers using checkerboard rendering to achieve their performance targets. I've seen plenty of checkerboarding implementations that look excellent.

It was a big IQ difference and a really great selling point for One X, but it was certainly an outlier and was not representative of the overall state of Pro vs X
DIRT 5 IMAGE QUALITY OR PERFORMANCE PS4
The PS4 Pro had a poorly-implemented checkerboard image in RDR2, whereas One X ran native 4K. The game this reminds me of is Red Dead 2. Most of the implementations I've seen are very good, like in Horizon and God of War. Those bad implementations seem like the exception when it comes to checkerboarding, not the rule. Obviously it's better to use only DRS when your checkerboarding method sucks. I'd rather have a high-quality stable checkerboard image than DRS if those res drops are significant and noticeable throughout. This just seems like a bad implementation and just the fact that it causes UI scaling issues suggests something's not right.
